At the moment 36 species of lizards (6 Gekkonidae, 12 Iguanidae, 1 Scincidae and 17 Teiidae) are known for certain to occur in French Guiana. Of these 36 species, four are reported from that country for the first time (Anolis marmoratus speciosus Garman, Cercosaura o. ocellata Wagler, Prionodactylus argulus (W. Peters) and Tretioscincus agilis (Ruthven)). Moreover, there remain four species of which the occurrence in French Guiana is very likely and which presumably will be found when more lizards are collected by specialists. Eleven species were erroneously reported from French Guiana by various authors. The reasons for their removal from the list of French Guianese lizards are given. The zoogeographical conclusions of Hoogmoed (1973) remain valid,... |

There is no entirely satisfactory strategy to mitigate the risks associated with flooding. In Australia, reliance is usually placed on structural measures; however, an appraisal under different criteria highlights reasons for their inadequacy. Insurance is initially advocated as an alternative and appraised under similar criteria. It is shown to be a useful mitigation strategy, although somewhat limited in that it is merely a palliative to the flood problem. An alternative approach to flood mitigation is hypothesized which incorporates insurance as its base and utilizes other measures, particularly structural, where feasible. Such an approach is shown to effectively maximize the beneficial features of both insurance and structural measures. Problems... |

There are three main parts to this paper. The first concerns the adaptation of conventional demand and supply theory to explain why and when the development of substitutes occurs. The second part is a discussion of four examples of substitutes that appear to have completed their developmental process. This is to see how the theory fares in practice. In the third part, implications of the theory are drawn for the beef industry which recently had its first serious encounter with substitutes. |

The objectives of this paper are five-fold: 1) it represents an attempt to describe the problems, issues, and policies related to the Spanish sugar subsector, and, to put together and organize some facts about its functioning; 2) finding sugar demand and supply relationships at the provincial and regional levels respectively; 3) some extrapolations of past trends in sugar consumption and sugar-beet production will be made in order to project long run levels to 1980 and 1985; 4) to find the area, or areas, which may be considered as the "main consuming areas" or places with "the largest sugar deficit" from which to compute the "threshold", "variable levies", and at-the-port-differentiated prices in an economically efficient way; and 5) to find whether... |

The Institute of Agricultural Technology traces its history back to 1894 when Dr. C.D. Smith began a class in farm dairying at Michigan Agricultural College. His purpose was to train people engaged in farming the art, science, and practice of milk production and buttermaking. The purpose of the Institute of Agricultural Technology is to enable men and women to gain marketable skills. Each program is eighteen months in length and includes classroom and practical work experiences. During placement training, the trainees are offered the opportunity to put their knowledge and skills to work and practice -- in sum to "learn to do by doing." In order to accomplish this, the directors and coordinators of the Institute of Agricultural Technology have... |

This paper attempts to analyze gaps between policy goals and policy results realized through process of policy implementation, and to investigate the obstacles which make such gaps. Generally, policy goals are set up by central government with ambitions and detailed instruction, however, policy results turn out unsatisfactory when policy is implemented through central and local government units. In connection with such happenings, as case study of a dairy cattle project in which a policy goal was to increase farm incomes, and policy results came out with 1) a large number of farms terminating their participation soon after they joined the project, and 2) poor farm management results among farms remaining in the project. |

Ten species are represented by the 40 wood specimens collected in 1969 from the Angmagssalik District of S.E. Greenland. Information concerning collection localities, diameter of wood specimens, number and breadth of growth rings and eccentricity is given. A comparison of growth ring observations is made with those made by Kruuse (1912), in three species from the same area, in relation to their growth form and environment. An anatomical description of the wood of the 10 species has been made together with an evaluation of some of the anatomical characteristics. Trends towards a modification of the wood due to environmental factors are indicated, but the fact that caution must be exercised when carrying out such an investigation is stressed, with special... |
